Blacksburg, South Carolina (WSPA) – South Carolina police officers lost everything, including four dogs, in a house fire this week.
“And I think they were looking for me to save them,” said officer Allen Baker.
Blacksburg police officer Allen Baker and his wife returned home Wednesday night to a house full of smoke and flames.
Baker’s wife called 911 when he tried to run inside the house to save his pet.
“I tried to get close enough to kick the door, but I couldn’t get any closer. I couldn’t save them,” the officer said.
He said their dogs were part of their family, four of whom died in the fire and the remaining three survived.
“Dogs have better hearing than we do, so I know they’re traumatized too. I know they heard their sisters barking inside,” says Baker. said the constable.
They lost everything they owned. Houses and things can be replaced, but lives taken can’t be replaced, he said.
“It never heals. Calluses grow on it, so it doesn’t hurt as much,” he said.
“These last few days I have spent years comforting people. I tell them God will not give you more than you can handle,” said Officer Baker. rice field. “I’m sure it will work. Those words are just empty.
Officer Baker is a lifelong service veteran and has held a police badge for 24 years.
The first call Officer Baker made was to Lt. Brian Mullinax.
“Do what we can to help him. Officer Baker has been a tremendous asset since he came to our department and for the short time he was there,” the lieutenant said.
Lt. Marinax said during his six months in Blacksburg, Officer Baker became part of the community.
“Every day we leave our families at home and go out and do what we can to protect and serve people,” he said. “When we see the outpouring of help we’ve gotten from the community, it’s a chance for them to give back to us.”
Lt. Marinax said the department would appreciate anything. Officer Baker asks the community for prayers.
