On Sunday, former President Donald Trump endorsed NCGOP chairman Michael Whatley as co-chair of the RNC. According to Trump’s email sent to supporters, Whatley has his “complete and complete endorsement”.

Whatley was first elected state leader in the summer of 2019. Under his leadership, the 2020 election was a huge success for the Republican Party. North Carolina residents voted Republican for president, senator, lieutenant governor, labor commissioner, and superintendent of education. Republicans also won all statewide judicial elections and increased seats in the Republican-controlled NC General Assembly.

In 2022, North Carolina is one of the few states where Republicans have met or exceeded expectations. North Carolina elected Republican Ted He Budd to the vacant seat in the U.S. Senate despite the poor performance of many Republicans running for Senate in 2022. Republicans regained control of the state Supreme Court, the state Senate won enough seats for a Republican majority, and the state Senate was within one seat.

A Watauga County native and Gaston County resident, Whatley has served as chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party since 2019. won re-election June 2021.

After Whatley was re-elected, someone noted that 2021 would be the first time in the 20 years of NCGOP conventions he has attended that we have seen a unanimously elected chairman.

Whatley’s current term as NCGOP chair ends this summer.
