South Carolina employees will no longer be able to access certain social media platforms on company devices, officials announced Monday. Henry McMaster has taken steps to block access to his TikTok from all state government electronic devices controlled by the South Carolina Department of Administration. The governor wrote a request to South Carolina Executive Director Marsha Adams. Threats from domestic and international threats are key to ensuring the health, safety and well-being of citizens and businesses,” McMaster wrote in the letter. “Federal law enforcement and national security officials have warned that TikTok poses a clear and present danger to its users, and a growing bipartisan coalition in Congress would ban access to TikTok in the United States. Cabinet agencies use shared services and centralization to enable agencies to perform common government functions efficiently and securely. These efforts include internet services and the management of mobile devices, computers and other online devices in government agencies, with a focus on cybersecurity. The governor has long encouraged state agencies to partner with the administration to ensure that the state’s cyber infrastructure can be maintained and managed in a comprehensive manner. In a letter to Adams, the governor is calling for accounting for agencies not currently using sharing services: agencies whose departments cannot permanently block his access to TikTok. ”
