Charleston, South Carolina (WCSC) – Given our New Year’s resolutions, the Red Cross encourages us to give back to our communities as Red Cross volunteers.
There are nearly 2,000 volunteers in South Carolina, according to the Red Cross, all of whom are an important part of the organization’s efforts.
Just a few of the types of volunteers they need include blood donation ambassadors who greet people, register people, answer questions and assist with blood donation efforts. Transport specialists who deliver blood from Red Cross facilities to local hospitals. A member of a disaster response team that provides emergency response to local disasters, including fires. Services to military clinic volunteers who help patients in military treatment clinics.
The only requirement for volunteers is to be at least 13 years old, says Lisa Miller Wills, Regional Volunteer Services Officer for the South Carolina Red Cross. Interested parties should consult with the Red Cross before applying to find out exactly which role is best suited for them.
“When they go through the system, they are screened,” says Miller-Wills. “We have volunteer screeners and we love them. can let you know.
According to the Red Cross, volunteers will respond to more than 1,700 disasters in South Carolina in 2022, saving nearly 5,800 people.
While many volunteers are helping locally, South Carolina Red Cross volunteers made a difference this year in ways beyond Palmetto.
“When Tennessee flooded, we had volunteers go there,” says Miller-Wills. “There are volunteers who went to us [Hurricane] Ian is still there when it first happened. We are still sending people out because the need has been there for a long time. Many volunteers have come to Florida and some have been to Puerto Rico. “
