Charleston, South Carolina (WCSC) – The American Red Cross is urging communities to take action to prevent a recurrence of the blood crisis.
In January 2022, the American Red Cross experienced the first-ever nationwide blood crisis.
To help prevent blood shortages this season, the Red Cross is calling on anyone who can consider giving back to their community by donating blood this holiday season.
Saskia Lindsey, regional communications manager for the South Carolina Red Cross, said this time of year has traditionally been difficult for the nation’s blood supply due to late blood donations, seasonal illnesses, and holiday travel. I was.

Lindsey said blood donations in the coming weeks are important to prevent shortages of the blood supply.

According to the Red Cross, traditional Thanksgiving fare is rich in iron, which helps ensure a successful donation.
To help address this blood supply shortage, they’re hosting a number of donation opportunities across the Lowcountry in the coming weeks.
The Red Cross offers several different incentives for those who choose to donate blood during the holiday season. These incentives include a Red Cross Knitted Beanie for donors who choose to donate Wednesday through Sunday, a $10 gift card for donors who choose to donate Monday through December 15th, and a $10 gift card from December 16th.
