Raleigh, North Carolina (WNCN) — Members of the ACLU of North Carolina and Decarcerate Now NC held a mock funeral on Sunday outside the Executive Mansion in downtown Raleigh to remember those who died inside the state prison in 2022. I was.
Christie Puckett of the ACLU in North Carolina said, “He’s not doing enough. He’s off to some good starts. We want to encourage greater use of the amnesty in North Carolina.” I will.”
While many people celebrated the New Year on Sunday, members of the ACLU and Decarcerate Now NC in North Carolina took time out to bring attention to those imprisoned in the state.
“People on death row and on parole never have any hope of escaping, so they rely solely on Governor Cooper, or whoever sits in this Governor’s seat, for the substance that only he can provide.” We will provide immediate relief,” Puckett said.
Puckett said the reasons behind the imprisonment varied.
“We know that criminalizing poverty, substance use and mental health is a big problem in prison, so we stopped funding the health care system and funded incarceration.” she said.
But she says everyone behind prison walls deserves a chance at life.
“At the end of the day, people are people,” Puckett said.
As of 2023, activists hope Cooper will pardon all death row inmates in the state and expand resources and protections within prison walls.
“People who are incarcerated are still your neighbors, and they still deserve all the love, community care, and community care this community has to offer,” Puckett said.
