Built in 1893 in the Easley community of Dacasville, the historic Hester Store building has been vacant for decades before being reopened by new owners as the Hester General Store. And inside this little gem is his one of the best bakeries in South Carolina.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. From the late 1800s to his late 1900s, it served as a family-run store and was also a community centerpiece where people gathered and socialized.
New owner Katie Cheney studied art history at Wofford University and fell in love with the building and its history from the first moment she saw it.
The Anderson native is thrilled to have the opportunity to restore it to its former glory as a general store and bakery.
You can’t help but feel happy eating her delicious treats in a cheerful and fun outdoor space. The mural behind the building is by Sunny Malarkey.
A strong community benefits us all. In addition to baked goods, the store offers to-go sandwiches, salads, soups, and charcuterie, all focused on local South Carolina farmers and producers. From meats, cheeses, eggs and dairy to vegetables and flowers, most of the store’s groceries are sourced from vendors within 10 miles of him. Gift items by local artists are also available.
For example, Greenville’s own Meeting ink and paper There are walls full of cards at every turn in the store.
A variety of fresh and non-perishable foods are also available, including produce, milk, beef, and pork. All of these are locally sourced from the Upstate and Southeast regions.
