LENOIR, North Carolina — Rain from Tropical Storm Nicole hadn’t started yet in Lenoir around noon Thursday, but the area is expected to see significant rain overnight through Friday.

It’s right in the middle of fall foliage season, so the timing of a storm is the worst. Channel 9’s Dave Faherty watched Lenoir Public Works employees try to clean a storm drain Thursday morning.

Up to 2 inches of precipitation is expected in Lenoir, with more rain likely along the Blue Ridge Parkway further north. The concern is that so many storm drains are now covered with fallen leaves, which could flood the roads.

In Lenoir and Hickory, residents are allowed to rake leaves on curbs so the city can go around and pick them up.

Public works chief John Hogan told Fahti that his crew was actually ahead of schedule, with both the roads and sanitation departments working to clear up problem areas. said.

“It’s bad timing because there’s a lot of fallen leaves on the ground. And the leaves are still falling as fast as they can clean them up,” Hogan said. It will fill up gutters and storm drains.”
