No. 16 Auburn will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to face the Gamecocks of South Carolina on Saturday afternoon, looking for a five-game winning streak.
The Tigers (15-3, 5-1 SEC) marked Auburn’s first victory in Baton Rouge, Louisiana since 2017 with a 67-49 road victory at LSU on Wednesday. 29.3{ea2cba5bdf6fe62bbe85e24807814144a71e77d3ae7311fbc27a008558d1372c} from floor, 20{ea2cba5bdf6fe62bbe85e24807814144a71e77d3ae7311fbc27a008558d1372c} from 3 point range.
“Good road win. Great balance,” said Auburn coach Bruce Pearl. “Having 49 points on 29 percent shooting is pretty impressive.”
Wendell Green Jr. and Jaylynn Williams each scored 14 points to lead Auburn in scoring. Green had four boards and four assists, and Williams had seven rebounds.
Green has scored in double figures in six of his last seven games, averaging a season average of 13.6. Against LSU, Green played 29 minutes in which he didn’t make a single turnover, and a crucial 15-2 run in the second half saw him score five points.
“Wendell Green was special,” Pearl said. “I think his tempo was really good. He controlled the game. When he runs, he runs. I trust you.”
While Green leads the team in scoring, Johnny Bloom is second with 12.3 points per game and Williams is third with 10.8 points. Bloom leads Auburn with his 8.5 rebounds per game. Green, Williams and Allen Flanigan have each made at least 20 of his 3-pointers this season.
Auburn ranks 15th in KenPom’s rating, while South Carolina (8-10, 1-4) slips to 240th, more than 100 spots behind other SEC teams (LSU is 106th). I’m here.
The Gamecocks are on a two-game losing streak since an upset over Kentucky’s decline. They trailed him 39 points at home to Texas A&M on Saturday and Ole Miss on Tuesday where he lost 70-58. South Carolina could only shoot 25{ea2cba5bdf6fe62bbe85e24807814144a71e77d3ae7311fbc27a008558d1372c} from across the arc and rebounds he was 43-31.
Freshman GG Jackson II led the Gamecocks with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
“I think it comes down to aggression,” South Carolina coach Lamont Paris said.
“You have to rebound. You have to go do it. Most shots miss. I don’t care who you are. When they shoot, most people You miss it. It’s a common thing in basketball. You have to anticipate it, you have to sniff it out, you have to want it.”
Auburn’s record against South Carolina is 29-19. The Tigers have five straight wins against the Gamecocks.
