Raleigh, North Carolina (WNCN) — The North Carolina Turnpike Authority continues its mission to complete I-540. Future South plans to extend the Triangle Highway (Toll NC 540) from the NC 55 Bypass to Interstate 40.
The contractor has scheduled a temporary nighttime closure of the North Carolina 55 Bypass between Old Smithfield Road and East Williams Street to continue work, while the contractor works on the bridge. The closure is located just north of the South Wake landfill in the Holly Springs Apex area.
Temporary road closures are weather dependent.
The crew plans to close the northbound lane on January 23, both lanes on January 24, and the southbound lane on January 25, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. 0:00 the next morning. NCDOT said access to Toll NC 540 will be maintained during the closure.
The detour route to the north is as follows.
- NC 55 Bypass North to Old Smithfield Road (turn right on Old Smithfield Road)
- Old Smithfield Road to East Williams Street (turn left on East Williams Street)
- East Williams Street to NC 55 North (turn right on NC 55 to go north on NC 55 or turn left to access NC 540 north)
The detour route to the south is as follows.
- NC 55 South to East Williams Street (turn left on East Williams Street)
- East Williams Street onto Sportsmanship Way (turn right onto Sportsmanship Way)
- Sportsmanship Way to NC 55 Bypass North (turn right on NC 55 and continue Northbound to access Northbound NC 540)
- NC 55 Bypass North to NC 55 Bypass South (Make a U-turn on NC 55 Bypass just north of Sportsmanship Way and continue south on NC 55)
Signs will be installed to inform drivers of upcoming closures and diversion routes. Drivers are asked to slow down, exercise extra caution when passing through work zones, and allow extra time to navigate detour routes.
