Greensboro, North Carolina – North Carolina’s social district is beginning to grow and evolve.
Since Governor Roy Cooper’s approval in the fall of 2021, every city in North Carolina has a social district.
Greensboro was one of the first neighborhoods to launch a downtown social district. Boro, in March 2022. Seth Kevorkian, owner of SouthEnd Brewing Co., said the program helps sell extra drinks at the end of customer visits.
“We bought a set number of cups and have been using them at a fairly steady rate,” says Kevorkian. “Overall beer sales have seen a small but noticeable increase.”
They wanted to strengthen the sense of solidarity in social gatherings.
“It’s not so much like, ‘Hey, I’m going to take this and my friend is going to get something out of it, let’s meet in this park and sit down and talk’.” It’s something,” said Kevorkian.
Greensboro City Council recently Voted against expanding BORO I proposed to include City Center Park and Tanger Center, but they voted to create A second separate social district Located on State Street. Officials in Greensboro said the state’s street social district will open at noon on his April 1st.
Bull City Cider Taproom Manager Jessica Harris said she was thrilled. In her words, adding a social district to the area would be “a piece of cake.”
“It’s bringing us more business. It’s bringing more business to Cafe Pasta, La Bamba, I don’t see the downside to that. Now we don’t have a problem with drunk people.” Harris said.
A spokesperson for the Greensboro Police Department said it did not see a negative impact of crime from the social district to downtown.
Many cities in North Carolina have implemented Social Districts, including Durham, Wendell, Hickory, and Albemarle. City leaders say the Social District is a success and is building its presence to bring nightlife and tourism to the region.
