GREENVILLE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA (WSPA) – The North Greenville Fire Department and Greenville County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fire that killed one man Sunday at Travelers Rest.

Lawmakers said the fire broke out on Block 5600 of Locust Hill Road.

Darlene Hoffman, who lives on Locust Hill Road, said things changed Sunday morning in an area residents say is usually quiet.

Eyewitness Darlene Hoffman said: “At 7am this morning, I thought it was either an explosion or a gunshot, but I’m not sure.

However, Darlene said that the next thing she heard made her understand what was going on.

“Then I heard a swirling sound like a tornado… no… not tornado weather,” Hoffman said. “So I wake up and look and it’s this big raging flame. So I pick up the phone and dial 911.”

She said the operator let her know that she wasn’t the only one who called.

“There was someone in the fishing pond behind me who heard it and ran over here and was calling 911 when he ran over here,” Hoffman said.

A short time later, four fire departments arrived at the home on Locust Hill Road and found one man dead.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
