CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) — Garrett Hien came off the bench and scored 13 of his career-high 20 points in the second half as Fuhrman pulled away from South Carolina in the seventh-place play-off at the Charleston Classic on Sunday.
Hien had 8-of-12 shooting, 3 of which were 3-pointers, and had 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Both teams entered the Charleston Classic with 2-0 records. The Gamecocks lost to Colorado State, 85-53 for him, and 69-60 to Davidson. The Paladins lost to Penn State 73-68 and the Old Dominion 82-77.
Jalen Slawson had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks for the Paladins. Tyrese Huey scored his 12 points and Mike Boswell scored his 11 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 steals.
GG Jackson II scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Gamecocks, while Chico Carter Jr. added 17 points.
Huey hit a 3-pointer in 12 1/2 minutes to give Furman a 56-45 lead and the Paladins to double digits.
Marcus Foster scored all eight points and three players scored seven as the Paladins took a 38–31 lead at halftime. Carter and Jackson both went 5/7 shooting and he scored 12 points at the Gamecocks, while his teammates went 2/11 combined.
Furman took the lead when Foster’s 3-pointer kicked off a 15-0 run to give them a 30-18 lead. Six different players scored in his five-minute stretch, in which South Carolina missed three of his shots committing three turnovers.

Furman announced Sunday that the school’s male athlete of the year will be named Frank Selby Male Athlete of the Year, in honor of the former Paladin star who was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday. Selby (1951- 54) led the NCAA as a junior and senior with scoring averages of 29.5 and 41.7, respectively, and scored 100 points on February 13, 1954.
