    DC utilities monitor aftermath of NC substation attacks

    In Moore County, North Carolina, power crews are working to restore power to thousands after an attack on a substation, and the situation has caught the attention of the DC area power company.

    In statements to WTOP, Pepco, BGE and Dominion Energy all said they are monitoring the situation in North Carolina and are in contact with authorities.



    Since Saturday, an investigation into the power outage has revealed that a substation has been hit with gunfire. The search for those responsible continues.

    Dominion spokeswoman Peggy Fox said in a statement, “Dominion Energy officials are working with federal, state and local law enforcement, intelligence agencies and industry officials to actively evaluate the North Carolina case. We are in touch,” he said.

    The company’s security plan comes with protections to protect the power grid, Fox said.

    BGE and Pepco, both of which are part of Exelon, said in a joint statement that they have worked and invested to ensure their systems are “secure and secure.”

    “Our emergency preparedness and security personnel are in regular contact with numerous federal, state and local security agencies and other key stakeholders to stay up-to-date on potential threats. We are working to ensure that we are able to respond safely and as quickly as possible if necessary,” said a BGE spokesperson. Richard Yost and Pepco spokesman Ben Armstrong said in a joint statement.

    Power providers will also work with government and industry partners to come up with new ways to address ever-evolving threats to power systems, Armstrong and Yost said.

    The three companies did not mention similar threats to substations in the DC area, nor did they mention whether security around the area’s substations would be increased in response to what was happening in North Carolina. not.
