Charleston, South Carolina (WCSC) – As more states legalize marijuana and the popularity of marijuana grows, the number of children accidentally poisoned by edible cannabis is skyrocketing in South Carolina. .

A new study from the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics found that the number of children under the age of five accidentally poisoned by edible foods has surged 1,375{ea2cba5bdf6fe62bbe85e24807814144a71e77d3ae7311fbc27a008558d1372c} since 2017.

Dr. Christopher Pruitt, medical director of the emergency department at the Medical University of South Carolina Sean Jenkins Children’s Hospital, thinks his team has seen a dozen young children suffer from it over the past few years. said the results were “not surprising.”

Pruitt says young children who ingest cannabis foods go into a state of minimal reactivity that appears to be extremely sleepy and difficult to wake up.

“One of the things that people find interesting or surprising about these products when young children are exposed to them is that they actually lead to something called central nervous system depression. Typically, like lethargy, it’s a state of minimal or no reaction for young children that many people don’t associate with marijuana-related products,” Pruitt said.

Young children are inquisitive and bright packaging of products looks attractive.

Pruitt said they usually expect young children to make a full recovery if they get treatment quickly.

“Most children do well with support, but if they are unable to get enough of these and seek medical attention quickly, the consequences can be devastating.” said Pruitt.

If you have these products in your home, Pruitt think of them like medicine.
