Folly Beach took center stage this month with the premiere of Netflix’s new heist drama, Kaleidoscope.
However, some viewers may have noticed that Netflix’s Folly Beach bears little resemblance to the real thing.
The show was filmed in New York City, and scenes set in Folly Beach, such as the episode titled “Pink,” were actually filmed in Corey Beach, Long Island, said communications director Samantha Queen. South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism OfficeLong Island News Site Greaterlongisland.com corroborated those findings.
“Kaleidoscope” released on January 1 ranked in Netflix’s most popular shows so far this year. This program is, Rotten Tomatoes website.
The anthology series follows a crew of thieves for 25 years as they try to break open a seemingly indestructible vault. “Kaleidoscope” is inspired by the true story of how his $70 billion bond went missing in downtown Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy.
The show consists of 8 episodes from 24 years before to 6 months after the robbery.
Much like 2018’s choice adventure film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Netflix gives viewers control over how they approach the story. Based on the order of episodes watched.
Every episode tells part of the story, but these segments are presented in a random order that varies by viewer, with the exception of the actual heist, which serves as the final episode. You can choose to stick to the order or create your own pattern.
“Kaleidoscope” showrunners did not contact the South Carolina Film Commission prior to filming, Queen said. She adds that she often has to make ends meet.

Similarly, Netflix’s Outer Banks is set in North Carolina, but was actually filmed in South Carolina. That decision was made because of North Carolina’s controversial anti-trans toilet bill.
South Carolina has a limited budget for attracting filmmakers to Palmetto. According to Queen, “The Outer Banks” and his HBO’s “Righteous Gemstone” are a large part of state incentives for filmmaking.
On average, states spend about $15.5 million in incentives on filming projects here. For fiscal year 2021-2022, the state’s most recent audit year, South Carolina Film Commission Issued approximately $19.9 million in rebates to film projects. In the same fiscal year, film projects eligible for these incentives spent approximately $97 million.
Amid the state budget surplus, lawmakers gave the Film Board an additional $7 million in incentives to attract additional projects to South Carolina in the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Her one of those projects revealed by the commission is her directorial debut with Laura Chin’s “Suncoast,” starring Laura Linney, Woody Harrelson, and Nico Parker.

The drama film is based on Chin’s life in the early 2000s. It follows a teenager (played by Parker) living with her strong-willed mother (played by Linnie), who takes her older brother to live in a specialized facility. depending on the deadlineWhile at the facility, Parker’s character forms an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist (played by Harrelson).
Queen said additional announcements of recipients of the $7 million increase in incentives will be made throughout the year.
“Our film industry is growing and thriving, but we’ve run out of incentives and have been forced to abandon projects.
The popularity of “Righteous Gemstones” and “Outer Banks” strengthened South Carolina’s filmmaking infrastructure. This includes hospitality, catering and other local services utilized by filmmakers during production.
We hope these new incentives continue on that trajectory.
