Alamance County, N.C. (WGHP) — Eastern Alamance High School football kicker Kirshin Johnson kicked the game to score an extra point in what he considers a highlight scenario of the past four years.
Her interest in soccer began long before her senior year of high school.
She began playing the sport in seventh grade as a defensive back. Ultimately, she decided she was better suited to be a place kicker.
She mostly kicks extra points while her teammates focus on kickoffs and punt returns.
“It was what people told me I couldn’t do.
“From our standpoint, we just want good players, we want quality people and Karshin came out. No cuts, but she’s getting her own way,” said Eastern Alamance football coach John Kirby.
Johnson scored another 49 points this year.
She says her leg strength has grown since she was in first grade.
“I probably couldn’t kick 25 yards, but as I grow, as I grow more, I get stronger,” she said.
She says she has had experiences where people have become more skeptical and more critical of her performance because she is a kicker for women. However, Johnson tries to ignore her negative comments.
“Those negative words… I think should get you the best,” she said.
Johnson also plays basketball and soccer.
She is gifted both athletically and academically. She ranks at the top of her class.
The Heisman Trophy Trust Foundation recently named Johnson the winner of the Eastern Alamance High School Scholarship Program.
