North Charleston, South Carolina – ECHL All-Star Cam Johnson made 38 saves, Joe Pendenza tied the scoreless early in the second period, Brad Morrison scored a crucial goal in the third, and Florida Ever The Blaze recorded an impressive 3-1 win. The South Carolina Stingrays will be held Sunday afternoon at the Charleston Coliseum in North He.
The win was the 500th professional win for Everblades head coach Brad Ralph and propelled Florida to first place in the ECHL South Division.
The Everblades’ second victory over the Stingrays was the second regulation win posted by a South Carolina opponent who entered the two-game series with a 13-0-2-0 home record in 2022-23. .
Johnson has a league-high 17 wins heading into Monday’s 2023 Warrior/ECHL All-Star Classic hosted by Optima Health and Sentara Healthcare, two more than any other league netminder.
Both teams collected 10 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, leaving 1 power play opportunity open each to keep neither team on the scoreboard.
The Everblades took the lead just four minutes into the second period, with Joe Pendenza scoring a scoreless deadlock and feeding from Nathan Staios and Blake Winiecki for his 10th goal of the year. Pendenza extended his scoring streak to his nine games with five goals and six assists as he tallied 11 points. South Carolina outscored the Blaze 13-8 in the middle frame.
Morrison doubled the Everblades’ lead with a power play goal at 1:05 of the third period, his second goal of the season. Stephane LeBlanc recorded his 18th assist of the season and scored his 100th point in his professional career as Florida led 2–0 for him.
South Carolina’s Kevin O’Neill cut the Blaze’s lead to 2-1 with a marker halfway through the frame, but Oliver Chau’s empty net goal, Pendenza’s assist for the ninth tally of the season, brought it to 2. We regained the goal lead. Florida, 3-1 winner.
In the third period, the Stingrays turned the heat on Johnson and defeated the Everblades 16-8 in the final period, but the All-Stars did their job and made 15 saves.
On a book-long road trip, Blade will enjoy a much-needed respite before returning to action on Friday, January 20, the first of two game sets with the Savannah Ghost Pirates. It kicks off and teams will also be connected on Saturday, January 21st at 7pm.

Joe Pendenza’s goal in the second period extended his scoring streak to nine games. Pendenza, who scored two points on the night, tallied 12 points with five goals and seven assists in those nine games. In December and January, Pendenza scored 18 points (5 G, 13 A) in his 17 games, of which he scored at least 1 point in 15 games.
Always generous teammate Blake Winiecki provided an assist for Pendenza’s goal as the ninth helper of the season, following his lead on Saturday night.
Brad Morrison has scored 2 goals in his last 4 appearances.
Nathan Staios has assisted on two goals in Florida, has five assists this season, and three since returning to the Blaze lineup on January 4.
Oliver Chau’s season ninth goal resulted in six multi-point games this year and two multi-point games in a two-game set in South Carolina.
In addition to leading the ECHL with 17 wins, All-Star netminder Cam Johnson boasts a 6-1-1-1 record and hasn’t made a single decision in his last 10 starts. .
Everblades improved to 11-0-1-1 with the lead after two periods.
