STATEVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two months after Kanecha Turner’s murder, the Stateville High School community and her former basketball teammates presented her family with high school memorabilia on Wednesday.

“Kaneicha was one of the people I really looked up to,” explained coach Gregory Stewart, who was with her during her four-year basketball career. “[Kaneycha] I changed the way I coach. ”

The 19-year-old graduate moved to Greensboro this year to pursue an academic career at NC A&T. On October 26, Turner was killed when a gunman opened fire at a party in her apartment complex.

Turner and the 15-year-old victim were “innocent bystanders.” Greensboro police have not been able to arrest the killer.

The family, searching for answers and waiting for justice for their grief, found solace in Kaneicha’s gift.

“I’m proud of her. Even though she passed away, I’m still proud of her,” Kaneicha’s mother, Latoya Rucker, told Queen City News after the ceremony. .

Rucker got a flash drive with videos of two of his daughter’s basketball games for the same reason he watched his daughter play memorable play after memorable play on half court. . Other items included a sweater, his teammate’s autographed game ball, and the original jersey Kanecha wore during his senior year of high school.

Rucker held back tears with each keepsake throughout the moving ceremony.

“It was an expected surprise. I didn’t know I could get it,” Rucker said. She left a positive impression on the people at school and I am very proud of her.”
