Jace Rainey’s family says he was airlifted to hospital after being hit while riding a scooter Saunders Street Sunday.
Honea Pass Police Chief Barry New said Rainey was playing with other children in his grandmother’s front yard.
Duphigny was immediately taken into custody, New said.
A dozen family members and friends gathered in court to stand by Jace.

He told the judge what he saw on Sunday.
“He hit him in the road like he killed him in the road. This monster on screen, my grandson can’t get out of the hospital. How can he get out of that cell?” Douglas Laney said.
“Justice was not served. It’s not fair that a four-year-old baby is playing in the street and he hits him and runs away,” said Valentina Lee, Jace’s aunt.
The judge has set a bond of $5,000 and Duphigny’s next court date is December 20.
Jace will have surgery on Monday and will turn 5 in a few weeks, according to his family.
